Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or education or a related field; master¿s degree strongly preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:* At least two years of experience as an editor for an academic publisher or in an academic setting; more experience preferred (salary will be determined by experience)* Solid command of the full range of editing skills, from copyediting and proofreading to deep substantive editing (applicants will be required to submit two editing samples and complete an editing test) * Demonstrated experience preparing and finalizing manuscripts for publication; keen eye for detail and accuracy* Track record of managing multiple high-stakes projects under tight deadlines* High degree of professionalism and ability to work effectively and diplomatically with faculty, researchers, and university collaborators at all levels* Agility with technology, including electronic editing and online search tools
Principal duties:The Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) is one of the most highly esteemed university-based education research and development centers in the world. WCER employs some 350 faculty, staff, and graduate students who work on more than 80 research projects spanning the full scope of education, from elementary education to undergraduate and graduate curriculum reform. WCER has annual extramural funding exceeding $45 million. The Administrative Program Specialist (Editor) will provide grants administration support, as well as a full range of editing services, from copyediting and proofreading to deep substantive editing. This position reports to the WCER director.Editing - Grant Preparation (40%)* Provide editorial support to university faculty and academic staff researchers in developing grant proposals to federal and nonfederal funding agencies (60 - 70 grant proposals submitted annually)* Engage in a collaborative and iterative process of proposal revision and editing with principal investigators. Edit the abstract, narrative, and references in grants; In some cases, edit appendices, human subjects narratives, and other documents. * Review and edit proposals to ensure they are cohesive, well-written documents that respond effectively to the call for proposals and comply with funding agency and university requirements. This often involves reorganizing, condensing (sometimes dramatically) to reduce length, and substantially rewriting proposals.* Edit references to conform to APA style and cross-check them against the textual citations* Provide copy editing - establish consistency of style and terminology; correct grammar and punctuation; apply templates and refine format to create a polished final document* Schedule and oversee work of backup editor(s) during peak periods as neededEditing - Working Paper Series (20%)* Serve as WCER Working Paper Series editor* Solicit, review, and edit new papers (generally 10 - 12/year) and prepare for web posting* Maintain series website and monitor site traffic * Coordinate submission of working papers to ERIC digital libraryGrants Administration (10%)* Provide pre-award, non-budgetary administrative support to researchers submitting grant proposals through WCER* Work with researchers and other WCER departments to ensure timely submission* Write and update WCER proposal-related documents and keep WCER proposal preparation website currentGrant Monitoring (10%)* Administer the WCER Grant Notification Service (GNS)* Identify federal and nonfederal funding opportunities within WCER¿s mission* Write and issue GNS notices (15 - 20/year)* Monitor federal appropriations and grant-making trends and draft WCER contributions to UW Federal Initiatives (annually)Institutional Review Board (10%)* Serve on the UW Education Research Institutional Review Board (IRB)* Serve on the IRB Expedited Review Committee (2 months/year)* Serve as WCER point of contact for questions about review of research with human subjects and advise researchers on compliance with federal regulations and university policiesSupervision (5%)* Train and supervise WCER backup editor(s)Other (5%)* Edit WCER's quarterly newsletter, WCER Research Highlights* Provide editorial services to faculty, academic staff researchers, and WCER as time permits* Respond to requests for permission to use WCER publications* Contribute to WCER Director's Office projects as needed
