Introduction:
The Web Content Editor and Project Coordinator is a key member of the historic preservation education team. This position will work closely with off-site writers, photographers, and illustrators –and– on-site historic preservation and web staff. The Editor will coordinate comprehensive educational web content for four distinct WHS audiences. These web-based educational projects will need to meet the Historical Society’s current goals and objectives; work within the Preserve America grant budget; and be delivered on schedule.
Job Responsibilities include:
  • Prioritize and coordinate content development with historic preservation consultants (subject matter experts, writers, illustrators, photographers) and staff.
  • Communicate with consultants, most of whom are located throughout the United States in different time zones, via email, phone, and Basecamp (an online project management system).
  • Work closely with off-site writers throughout the content planning, editorial scheduling, and the editing process (developmental, final copy, and web).
  • Meet the editorial goal of creating user-friendly content with the user’s perspective and needs in mind. Content will need to follow the project style guide, align with the WHS voice, and be consistent with high-level messaging and positioning strategies. Ensure content follows editorial procedures and is grammatically correct and accurate.
  • Work closely with off-site photographers and illustrators to coordinate, develop, and curate graphics for each editorial project.
  • Act as liaison between consultant, HP staff, and web team. Your role as a coordinator will require ongoing project management communication and troubleshooting (technical and editorial) with all members of the historic preservation education team.
  • Work closely with the web team to publish web content on wisconsinhistory.org.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • 3+ years strong editorial experience
  • Web editorial experience preferred but not required.
  • Project management experience is essential.
  • Ability to synthesize complicated information into appropriate, target-audience language and guide writers through this process.
  • High level of organizational skills, attention to detail.
  • Ability to problem solve individually and in a team setting.
  • Effective and persuasive team and one-on-one communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a dynamic team environment
  • Proficiency in MS office software tools required. Experience using content management systems and project management software desired
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook and current web style conventions preferred.

Time Commitment

This is a 40 hour per week position through the end of the project, estimated January 2013.
